世界でコンピュータを造れるメーカーが存在する国はどこか。誰でも作れるPCを別にすれば、米国と日本しかない。欧州では絶滅したし、AV機器や自動車では血眼になる中国や韓国も、高性能の商用サーバーやストレージなどを製造する意思はほとんど無い。おそらく中国や韓国は、クラウドの時代だからハードウエアはPCサーバーなどのコモディティで十分と考えているのだろう。

ということで、米国を除けば日本のみにコンピュータメーカーが残された。よくもまあ狭い市場の中で、富士通、日立製作所、NECの3社もが残ったものだと思う。狭い市場ゆえ、製造業だけでは足らず、システム開発・運用というサービス業としての力も付けてきた。日本のユーザー企業が育んだ“レガシー資産”と言ってよい。しかもある意味、歴史の皮肉だが、IBMなど米国勢の影響力が圧倒的に強かったため、他の産業と異なりガラパゴス化しないで済んだ。
