司書：不思議に思われるかもしれませんが、何を調べたいのかを小出しにする方がおられるのです。いいえ、ほとんどの方がそうされると言った方が正確かもしれません。目的をぼやかした方が、断られにくいようにお感じなるのかもしれません。たとえば、ニューヨークタイムスのある記事を探している方は、多くの場合最初は「英字新聞はおいてないか？」と質問されます。ございますと答えると「ニューヨークタイムスはあるか？」、これにもございますと答えると「＊＊年頃の記事が見たいんだがあるだろうか？」。すぐに気付かれるように、私たちの方からまず「何をお探しですか？」、そして「お知りになりたいのは何でしょう？」と質問すべきなのです。探している当のものがなくとも、目的を知っていれば、代わりになるものや、その目的にもっと適したものを提案することができます。
